Third Annual 5K Run/Walk and Children's Fun Run

The Upper Freehold Regional Education Foundation (UFREF) is proud to host the 3rd Annual 5K run/walk and 1 mile children's fun run on Saturday, May 21, 2011. The Race registration will begin at 4:00 pm at the High School with the 1 Mile Fun Run starting at 5:00 pm, and the 5K Run/Walk will begin at 6:00 pm. The NJ State Police and the Allentown Police will handle traffic detours along the 5K route. Rt 539 will be temporarily closed from High Street to Walnford Rd between 6pm — 7pm. The course will begin in the back parking lot of Allentown High School, go through the Elementary School parent parking lot, turn right (heading south) onto Rt. 539, and continue until Walnford Rd. The race will turn around at that point and return to the High School the same way. The 1 mile fun run will take place on school grounds.
Lt. Robert Hanley, the New Jersey State Police and Sgt. Daniel Panckeri from the Allentown Police will be controlling traffic flow.
"We hope to exceed last year's turnout where we had over 130 runners and raised close to $3,000. It is a great opportunity for the community to push for physical fitness and to support their children of the Upper Freehold School District" said UFREF President James Derasmo. Events like this and our most recent Sno-Ball Tournament in February, allow UFREF to fund programs, projects, activities, and equipment to help enhance the educational experience of our children.
"With the tremendous offer of time, support and generosity, from our friends, families, and neighbors since 2007 the Upper Freehold Regional Education Foundation has been able to award approximately $125,000 relating to grant requests submitted by the faculty and staff of the UFRSD including $32,000 in targeted donations received in support of the Robotics Club and the "Bridging the Gap" Initiative, which was launched with the start of the school year" said Sydney Guerrero, UFREF Vice President.
The race has added to rural community draw for the residents of Winchester Estates as well as the 64 houses along Route 539. The residents from Sharon Station Road to Main Street set up chairs and help cheer on their fellow friends and neighbors.
This event would not have been possible without the exceptional and overwhelming support by our community, UFREF Trustees Scott Smith (UFREF Treasurer), Jim Buchanan, Tanya Cheff, Danielle Estevez, Karen Kilcher PTA Liaison, Catherine Reeves AHS, Patricia Hogan & Steve Gagliardi from the Board of Education, The Upper Freehold Regional District led by Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick, and the School Administration for AHS, Stone Bridge Middle School, and Newell Elementary School.
As with all of our events, the community, friends, neighbors, and your local businesses help support UFREF. This year's sponsors were Larry Cocozello for New York State Corrections Officer's PBA (NYSCOPBA), Jimmy Hines for Mercer Oaks Catering as our Platinum sponsors; Dr. Byrnes as our Gold Sponsor; the Alexander Family, the Derasmo Family, the Goddard School, Mr. Mom's Day Care, Swal Diary, Kiddie Academy, Clarksburg Inn, APlus Athlete, and the Nolan Family as our Silver Sponsors. We would also like to thank Bryan Scheff from the Goddard School who was inadvertently omitted as a Base-on-Balls Sponsor during our most recent Sno-Ball Tournament held in February. Raffle and Gift Cards will be offered from Village Pharmacy, VC Salon, La Piazza, Necessities for the Heart, Bloomers N' Things to Do, Swal Diary, and Road ID. Many thanks go to the Allentown Track team for providing race side water and support to our racers that day, the Lt. Robert Hanley from the New Jersey State Police Department, Sgt. Daniel Panckeri from the Allentown Police, Upper Freehold Township, Allentown Borough Township, the Winchester Estates Development, and the Allentown First Aid Squad EMT Doug Cary, Justin Sydney Guerrero, and Captain Janeann Barlow providing onsite support if necessary. Music Entertainment will be provided by The Gabe Manak Band.
Goody Bags, T-shirts, Medals for Category Winners and ribbons will be awarded to Race participants. For more information on the race, please contact UFREF Trustee Kathy Cary.
